Chapter Fifteen
Jacqueline
By the time I got home I’d been through so much stress that I had almost convinced myself I couldn’t even feel it anymore. All of my coworkers knew about who I was “dating.” Dylan’s father knew about the fact that his son’s new girlfriend was one of his employees. And as I stepped out of the elevator and walked as quickly as I could to my apartment, I could feel the low dread in the pit of my stomach at the idea of meeting him over dinner. Okay, maybe not immune to anxiety just yet, I thought, hurrying in and trying to wrap my mind around what I could wear to meet the billionaire father of a trust fund kid, who also happened to own the company I worked for.
I decided to start with freshening up a bit: I took my hair down and made sure it fell properly, touched up my makeup—a little more than I wore at work, but less than I would wear for a night out with friends—and made sure my teeth were clean and I smelled good. I peered into my closet for as long as I dared, switching between different outfits and dresses until I knew I had to just settle on one. I stripped off my work clothes carefully to avoid messing up my makeup or hair, and pulled on a spaghetti-strap maxi dress with a light, floral pattern on it, putting a belt on to define my waist a little better, and slipping on my nicer pair of sandals. I didn’t have time to paint my toenails, but my feet looked clean and neat, so I figured that if that made the difference to Dylan’s father, I was screwed anyway.
I fiddled with some jewelry and finally had to make myself leave the apartment because I knew I was just procrastinating. It would be better to just get it all over with and taken care of, and see what the outcome was; even if my heart was beating an 80s hair band drum solo. I would be better off just to face the situation. I double-checked that I had my keys and my phone in my purse, and made sure I hadn’t messed up my makeup one last time, and then left my apartment.
“Right on time,” Dylan said, greeting me at the door, and I put on the same kind of polite smile that I used to plaster on my face when I was still working customer service, back in college. I leaned in and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek, since we were still—as far as Dylan had told me—keeping the story that we were actually dating. “Dad, this is Jacqueline. Jacqueline, this is my father.” I stepped into the apartment, and in the living room, I spotted Robert Brandt. He rose from the couch, extending his hand to shake mine, but I could see that he was sizing me up.
“You are very different from what I was expecting,” Robert Brandt said, accepting my handshake.
